Be a STEM Ambassador: Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Professionals

James Cahalane (Project co-ordinator at Eden Renewables) inspiring students at an in-school workshop with EEE.

Many children have little exposure to careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and often do not know how to pursue a path in these fields. As a professional working in STEM, you have a unique opportunity to change this by sharing your experiences with young people.

If you can dedicate just an hour—half an hour of preparation and another half-hour speaking to students in a webinar or live session—you can make a significant impact. Discuss your job, your skill set, and the reasons you are passionate about your work. This is an opportunity to dispel common misconceptions and provide a real-world perspective on STEM careers.

Here are some ways you can inspire future STEM professionals:

1. Reflect on Your Journey
Think about who or what inspired you to follow your career path. How can you share this with others in a way that will motivate them?

2. Offer to Speak
Volunteer to speak at a local school, or in a webinar, perhaps through your children’s school or in your local community. Sharing your story can spark interest in STEM among young minds.

3. Share Your Day-to-Day
Where permitted, share insights into your daily work life online. With few visible thought leaders in the industry, you could become a key voice in promoting STEM careers.

4. Support Existing Initiatives
Get involved in your company’s existing STEM outreach programs. Your participation can strengthen these efforts and reach a broader audience.

5. Join Online Career Workshops
Contribute your expertise to virtual career events, helping students and young professionals better understand the possibilities within STEM.

6. Mentor New Talent
Offer to mentor someone just starting out in the industry. Your guidance could provide invaluable insights into the sector and help shape the future of STEM.
